Here is a staple dish in the Philippines cooked at home and eateries everywhere. A few easily found ingredients make for a tasty "beefsteak" dish. It's important to get tender cuts of beef, or use thinly sliced such as sukiyaki beef. I used beef already sliced into small strips to cook this dish, perfect for stir frying. This makes for a typically simple Filipino dish that is delicious.

Ingredients:

1) 300 to 400g sliced beef

2) 3 TBSP soy sauce or more depending on amount of beef

3) Ground black pepper, to taste

4) 1 lemon or lime juice

5) Oil for stir frying

6) 1/2 cup water

7) Add garlic cloves pressed (optional)

8) 1 medium sized onion, sliced into rings

To Do:

1) Slice beef into bite sized pieces. Add soy sauce, and 1 fresh juice of lemon or lime

2) Mix and let marinate for at least 1 hour, up to 3 to 4 hours to let beef soak up marinade

3) Heat oil in wok, drain the beef and stir fry until brown along with garlic (if using). Some people fry the beef until it's cooked almost crispy. In any case, it should be cooked well done.

4) Add water to remaining marinade, and slowly add to beef to simmer

5) When hardly any liquid is left, add the onions and stir fry. We like to leave the onion slightly raw and crunchy, but cooking all the way through is good, too. The onion adds extra flavour and sweetness.

6) Serve the dish with wedges of fresh lemon, and with steamed rice.

Mabuting Gana!
