We went for dimsum for the first time at Chong Qing, getting there exactly at 10:00am when they just opened. Unsurprisingly, we were the first customers and until we left, we remained the only ones. We got excellent attention and service. :-)
Their dimsum menu is more limited than other typical places serving purely dimsum. They have the standard shrimp dumplings (hakau), but no siu mai, or rice rolls, for example. Chong Qing complements their dimsum choices with many noodle soup dishes, however, that aren't usually found in other places. Their speciality, after all, is Szechuan/northern Chinese dishes, so their dimsum offerings are not as extensive as Cantonese style places. Regardless, what we had were all good quality and no less in size or portion as other good places. We had the standard hakau, prawn spring rolls, spare ribs black beans, bbq pork buns, and something different that was shrimp and chive dumplings deep fried (had a choice of steamed ones, too). Next time, we'll order stuff that aren't found in other dimsum places. We were glad to see that the standard dishes we had were all good quality and nicely sized portions. Definitely a good alternative from the only other good dimsum place in Surrey, which is Neptune Seafood.
New Chinese Resto in Surrey, BC - Chong Qing

With the lack of good authentic Chinese restaurants in Surrey, BC, we were pleasantly surprised to drive by 120th Street to see Chong Qing Szechuan restaurant a few weeks ago. We made plans to visit last Friday for dinner, hoping and wanting to see if this place would be worth supporting. I think with the lack of good Chinese restaurants in Surrey, most diners likely would have felt this could be a place worth supporting as the resto was about 3/4 full...we're hoping, anyway. Chong Qing is the fourth branch of the restaurants based in Vancouver. We've never been to any of them until now.
We were presented with a nice thick classy menu to our delight...a sign at their attempt to present something classy and we hope, good. Since moving to the Vancouver area from Montreal, we have never been able to find "General Tao's chicken". That's the battered deep fried morsels of chicken covered in a garlicky, gingery, sweet sauce that was so popular in any good Chinese restaurants in Montreal. Instead, about the closest thing we have is "general Tso's chicken" which is somewhat different. Hoping that it would be like our old favorite, we ordered it. The chicken pieces were crispy and delectably covered in a sweet tangy sauce but still not quite like "general Tao's chicken", the way we remembered it. We also had a small order of hot and sour soup. The small order would be good for four people. The soup was spicy "medium hot", hotter than what one would typically get from some other Chinese places and we like the spiciness of it. The ingredients had the typical tofu, shrimps, pork, mushrooms, and egg drop. I felt the soup could use more egg drops for texture and richness but otherwise it was good.We also ordered the crispy fish fillet on a bed of veggies, thinking one dish further adds good protein (albeit deep fried) while providing the share of veggies required to make a balanced dish. The fillets were crispy, tender while the veggies were crunchy; signs of a good fast hot stir fry cooking technique. A nicely portioned dish with just the right amount of fish for balance.Anyone who loves Chinese knows that nothing goes better with deep fried stuff than with a plate of fried rice. The Chong Qing fried rice had bbq pork, shrimps, scrambled eggs and had that hot wok flavour that makes it a dish all on its own, but which complements all other dishes we'd ordered. Overall, we were happy to have a new Chinese place to go to in our neighbourhood that is authentic, finally. We'll have to put Chong Qing in our "to support" list!
